Their Story

Why did you choose to get married in Santorini and at the Santorini Gem?

My husband and I are huge travelers; experiencing different cultures, foods and world views has shaped us both individually and as a unit. While neither of us had been to Greece before, it was high on both of our bucket lists, and we figured that the odds of anywhere in Greece not being beautiful we’re low. We fell in love with the pictures of Santorini and knew that’s where we wanted to tie the knot.

We invited around 40, both family and friends, and 28 accepted.

My dress was actually my mom’s dress, so I didn’t have to go through the decision of what make, style, or price point my dress should be (which was perfect as I am not a shopper). The beading and lace detail of my mom’s, and now my, dress is absolutely beautiful, and it was wonderful to have that shared memory. The only changes I made from her original dress were to cut off the long sleeves and turn those into a drop sleeve (she got married in February in Cincinnati, Ohio so the weather was a bit different) and to sew up the slit in the back and make the slit up the side. She also had a train included with her dress, which I had turned into two shawls – one for me and one for her.

I wore two different shoes for the wedding: a pair of blue high heels for the ceremony and then custom converse for the remainder of the night. The converse had the date 10.4.2025 on one shoe and 6.6.2025 on the other, our Greece wedding date and local wedding ceremony date, respectively. My bracelet, necklace and earrings were simple silver with a pearl drop, as I wanted to highlight the intricate beading of my dress.

My husband had a custom suit made of a blue linen blend for a touch of upscale comfort. His tailor surprised him with embroidering our wedding date on the inside of the lapel.

I wanted my bridesmaids to pick out their own dress as all of them have a very different style and I wanted them all to feel beautiful and comfortable. I told them that the color just had to be a deep pink as we thought that would look phenomenal against the blue sky and water backdrop of our alter (and it did).

We decided to go with a floral heavy decoration with deep blues, pinks and oranges as we wanted the décor and clothes to pop against the backdrop. Fresh flowers were the highest priority décor-wise for us, and the arches and table pieces turned out absolutely gorgeous.

It’s hard to pick just one, but I would say our dinner. Having everyone sit at one table together ensured we were surrounded by those we love the most. The food was phenomenal and the conversation even better. The dinner highlighted the immense amount of love at that table.

There are a multitude of reasons why a wedding abroad stands out. The first one that comes to my mind is that it gives the couple and wedding guests the opportunity to experience a different part of the world. We feel in love with Greece and feel honored that we got to get married there. The second reason is simply the fact that the geography is breathtaking, which translates into incredible aura of the event as well as stunning pictures.

Make sure you sit back and enjoy the ride. One of the big reasons we wanted to get married in Greece was to visit Greece. If we were stressed about the event and didn’t take time to appreciate and enjoy the island, it would have been a waste of a long flight. The tours, hikes and dinners we were able to experience together and with our guests was one of the best parts of getting married abroad.
