Their Story

Why did you choose to get married in Crete?

We chose our venue because we wanted to choose a venue that was close to nature. We also loved the idea of getting married in an amphitheater surrounded by peacocks and wild flowers.

After choosing the venue we went to Crete last year to visit and it was the perfect introduction to Crete’s warm people, great food and expansive culture.

We had 39 guests in attendance at our wedding and invited probably around 50. We had a very international wedding were so very grateful to our guests who travelled from the likes of South Africa, Canada, UAE, Chile, Norway and Spain to be in attendance. Naturally, not all guests would be able to make such a trip, so some of Josh’s South African family were unfortunately not able to be there on the day.

My dress was designed by Jesus Piero and it was the first thing I sorted for the wedding. I had the dress sorted before I booked our venue! I loved the simplicity of the dress and the beautiful, flattering cut.

My most sentimental accessory was my necklace, which was borrowed from my Grandmother. She could not be there on the day, so by wearing something she owned brought a sense of closeness to her on the day.

Josh brought his suit from Suit Supply in the City, London. We knew that we wanted the ushers to wear black-tie but it was important for Josh to wear an elevated version of black tie and an ivory jacket was perfect for that brief. For me, I also think that double breasted jackets are timeless.

The idea behind the theme was to be timeless, romantic and elegant. The vision was an old Hollywood glam meets Grecian beauty. Beauty in the organic food from the park, from the lush scenery and warm weather that meant we could get married outside closer to nature.  Lisa and the team completely got it. Our floral floor arch specifically was one of my favourite details of the day.

My best memory from the day is seeing Josh’s face for the first time as I walked down the aisle. I had been assured throughout the planning process that he would not cry, so as soon as I saw him sobbing I couldn’t help but also burst into tears. I think even the first wobble of Josh’s lip had set half of the guests in the amphitheater off!

A wedding abroad stands out from a UK wedding because all of your guests have from the outset committed to having a great time and it is a prolonged experience. For example we were able to have a welcome party, pre-wedding dinners and guests also stayed days after the wedding to enjoy the island, which we loved.

Clearly aside from the better weather, the landscape is unbeatable. We love UK stately home but you can’t beat drinking an espresso martini or a mojito looking over the rolling landscape, at the foot of the Cretan white mountains!

As people who went back and forth many times and were conscious about not all of our family being able to attend – ultimately it’s your day. If people would like to join you then that’s amazing and if they can’t come then don’t take it too personally. Once you are there it will be the best experience; the feeling of getting on that flight to finally become married is unparalleled! Trust an experienced professional like The Bridal Consultants to take the pain of planning away and you can’t go far wrong.
